The auspicious festival of Lohri is celebrated for various reasons. One reason is that it marks the end of cold winter days and the coming of spring and warmer days. It is also known as a time of rejuvenation, especially for Punjabis, as winter signifies death and decay. People celebrate the end of the dreading cold days and the beginning of a new year and better days on Lohri.
Another essential reason why Lohri is celebrated is to honour the goddess of fertility, Lohri Mata. It is said that Lohri Mata blesses couples with children at this time, and it is considered a very important and auspicious festival for newly married couples. Another major reason why Lohri is celebrated is that it marks the end of the crop season. In many regions of India, the Rabi crop is harvested at this time, and Lohri is celebrated to thank the Gods for the plentiful crops. Farmers celebrate their hard work of the season and thank the lord for their crops.

Lohri is celebrated in various parts of India. The festival is celebrated with the most pomp and show in Punjab. On Lohri, people light a bonfire in the evening, known as the Lohri fire. The Lohri fire is considered purifying and auspicious, and people gather around it to sing and dance in the evening. Various gifts and sweets are exchanged among people and their loved ones. Some of the most common sweets are Gajak, Til Laddoo and Rewri. Sweets made from jaggery and Til are also offered to the Lohri fire. Farmers producing Rabi crops, mainly in Punjab, also offer their first harvest to the Lohri fire and pray for a successful harvest season.
Another very important part of the Lohri festival is the Folk songs sung around the Lohri fire. People gather and sing traditional folk songs of fertility, prosperity, and the harvest season. People also sing songs of Dulla Bhatti, a Punjabi folk hero known for his bravery in protecting the poor. A dance called “Dulla Bhatti da Kikar” is also performed around the Lohri fire as a tribute to the local hero.
