Only a saree has the ability to make an Indian woman look like a diva. Most Indian women wear this traditional outfit in different ways and styles. Wearing a saree to perfection takes a lot of time since it is basically an art. If you are a beginner and want to know how to tie a saree, then do look at the following steps that will help you tie one in a couple of minutes.
Step 1: Gather the materials
- Blouse: A blouse or choli is an important garment that has to be worn when draping a saree. It covers your upper body and comes in different styles like sleeveless, full sleeves, and backless. If you wish to know how to tie a saree perfectly, then you have to choose a blouse that fits you well and is not loose or ill-fitted.
- Petticoat: It’s an underskirt without which you can never wear a saree. It’s tied at the waist by using a drawstring. It’s used to tuck the saree and must match the colour of your saree.
Step 2: Wear the essentials
- Firstly, wear a blouse or choli that fits you perfectly.
- Wear high heels, and then wear a matching petticoat.
Step 3: Start draping the saree
- Tuck in the upper end of your saree into the petticoat. Start from the right of your navel when you tuck it. The saree should be tucked in such a way that its lower end touches the floor. While tucking, ensure that the fall and the designs face outside. Now, wrap the saree around neatly.
Step 4: Make the pleats
How to tie a saree with perfectly assembled pleats? Look below to know how! Follow these to the T and you are sorted!
- Hold the extra portion of the saree that is seen hanging out once you have tucked it tightly. Use your thumbs and pinky finger to hold the fabric tightly and neatly.
- Now, make five or seven pleats measuring about 5 inches in length. You have to start making the pleats in the tucked area. Make sure that the pleats arranged are neat with their lower end looking even. Use your fingers to straighten the pleats in a neat manner. But while doing so, do not bend. Many women use a safety pin to tie the pleats together so that they fall in a straight way.
Step 5: Tuck in the gathered pleats
- After you have gathered or assembled your pleats, tuck these neatly inside the petticoat. You can tuck these to the right of your naval and not exactly over it.
Step 6: Drape the saree around
- Once you have tucked in the pleats, drape the rest of the saree around yourself. It should start from left, go around your back and come to the right. When draping, make sure that you hold the saree tightly and do not raise it too much.
Step 7: Drape the pallu
- The pallu has to be fastened or draped neatly using a safety pin. It’s the rest of the saree fabric that you see on your back, on the left side of the shoulder. The pallu’s end should reach the back of your knees and never under it. Use a pin to secure the pallu and prevent it from slipping every now and then. Either let the pallu fall freely, or pleat it up.
Styling Tips on how to tie a saree artfully
Look at these tips that will teach you how to tie a saree like a pro! Follow these to the T and you will ace your saree wearing game like a pro!
- Always use your creative ideas on selecting the type of choli or blouse you wish to wear in order to stylise your saree. Go for a sleeveless blouse if you are planning to wear chiffon, or else, wear a long-sleeved blouse if you want a more formal look. Wearing a backless blouse with a georgette saree can add dazzles to your look.
- Choose high heels when wearing a saree as these will lend you height and will make you look glam. Do not wear flats or boots at all.
- Tie your saree in such a way that it covers your toes. A peeping toe looks a bummer and must be avoided at all costs!
- Instead of using a safety pin, secure your pallu with a stylish broach.
- Arrange your hair in a stylish braid or a bun and deck it up with ornamental clips and pins.
- Apply elegant makeup that complements your saree and hairstyle.
- Wear matching jewellery to add more shimmer to your look.
