People around the world just love flowers. The colours, different shapes, different species, fragrances, there’s nothing about a flower that people hate. Everything looks and smells just perfect when it comes to these lovely flowers. We, as Indians, have an even more special place for flowers in our heart because we use them for almost all auspicious occasions.
We offer them to our gods, irrespective of the religion, we use them to shower blessings over people and we use them for all special occasions like weddings, pujas and festivals too.
You can add a lot of flavour to your wedding with a set of lovely flowers. Since they are so universally loved, you can add flowers in just about anything. The following are a few ways to use the flowers to your advantage at a wedding!
1. Décor using flowers
First things first, the décor of the event space is one of the most important factors in setting the theme and ambience of the wedding. It not only tells us about the kind of wedding one can expect, but it also makes the event aesthetically pleasing to the eye. You can use any of the innumerable ideas that come to your mind for the décor and discuss it with your wedding planner.
Apart from creating gorgeous background panels and decorating the mandaps, use lovely flowers for various other pieces of art as well. Be creative in this aspect to make something cool!
2. Gajra can never go out of fashion
Who does not like to flaunt the gajra hairstyle at a wedding? Almost every woman likes to have lovely flowers in her hair. It adds a certain charm to the one who wears it. Moreover, it is not something that is just for the bride, every woman at a wedding can wear it and look great with it. In India, we can see the use of jasmine flowers more so in South India.
In other parts of the country, the use of other flowers like roses is more prominent. However, you don’t just have to go by your state. Pick colours and types of flowers that match your outfit!
3. Phoolon ka chaadar
Phoolon ki chaadar is a common thing seen in many of the north Indian weddings. In this ceremony, the brothers of the bride hold a sheet of lovely flowers over the bride’s head as she enters the mandap for the wedding. In creating this chaadar, you can be as creative as you want. Use as many flowers as you want but make sure you do not go overboard.
Moreover, you can choose the colour of the flowers according to the outfit of the bride. If the bride is wearing an ivory coloured dress, the majority of the flowers used should be white in colour. Jasmine, a beautiful white flower, also gives off a lovely scent and can be a great option for this!
4. A bouquet to welcome the bride and groom
Now, this is not a common practice all over India but it is common in Christian weddings in general and in some cultures in South India. While in a Christian wedding, it is generally the bride holding the bouquet, in Hindu South Indian weddings, the brother of the bride welcomes the groom upon his arrival.
These are the slight differences in culture but the use of lovely flowers is all the same.
5. The Varmala flowers
One of the most important ceremonies in a marriage is the use of varmala by both the bride and the groom to complete the marriage ceremony. Initially, the groom ties a mangalsutra, the holy chain that makes a marriage legit, after which the varmala ceremony takes place. This varmala is made up of lovely flowers, mostly white and red.
In some culture, they use green leaves as well or flowers of different colours other than white and red. You can create a number of designs but do not go for heavier ones or the ones with too many different coloured flowers used together as it can clash with the outfits of the couple.
6. Shower of flowers for the blessings
Just when the groom ties the Mangalsutra to the bride, all the relatives and close friends throw flower petals on the newly married couple as a way to shower them with their blessings. The most commonly used lovely flowers for this purpose are red roses. Some may use pink roses or even marigold as well. It depends on your personal choice. Furthermore, one can observe the use of flowers for blessings in other events like Haldi or Mehndi as well at times.
As you can see, lovely flowers feature heavily in Indian traditions and customs, no matter which part of the country the couple belongs to! Therefore, you must certainly include them in your wedding as well!
