To celebrate Makar Sankranti, some devotees take a dip in the river Ganges to wash away their sins and cleanse their souls. Makar Sankranti is a pan-Indian festival and is celebrated throughout the country with different names. 

Celebrated mainly by the agricultural communities, one of the most unique features of Makar Sankranti is that it's celebrated on the same day every year. In Southern India, Makar Sankranti is celebrated as Thai Pongal, while some of the other names of this festival in different regions include Khichdi, Uttaryan, Mahi and Maagh Bihu. The festival also has different traditions and rituals that are followed by different states and communities.  Like in Maharastra, Makar Sankranti is a three-day festival which includes worshipping the Sun god on the first day, along with flying kites.
