A Pakistani wedding would usually start off with a lot of fun and singing. This is called a dholki session that’s organised at home. Friends and family gather at the homes of the bride and groom for some fun pre-wedding celebrations. There is a lot of singing and dancing along with chatting that goes on during the Dhol session. The dhol is usually played with a metal spoon and the ladies gather around to sing some traditional songs.

The Mehndi event is one of the most awaited celebrations of a Pakistani wedding. It’s a fun-filled event where the youngsters of the family will prepare different dances for the Mehndi function. These dances are then presented to the couple. Often the couples would also join in and dance along as well.
Yellow is the colour and the bride would make sure to wear a yellow outfit or at least a touch of yellow in her attire. Mehndi would then be applied to the bride's hands – some love to cover their arms and feet too! Today, there are different types of mehndi designs that Pakistani brides prefer. These include Mughal and peacock themed designs that come with a twist.
3. The Fun-filled Mayun Function

Mayun is the next event that takes place before the wedding. It’s a function where a yellow paste that’s made of sandalwood powder, turmeric, herbs and aromatic oils are applied on the bride. This paste is usually applied by the groom’s sister and mother.
During the Mayun, a female relative or sister of the groom will also attach a garland string on the bride’s arm as well. The Mayun is also another excuse to enjoy some dancing, singing and good food! A Mayun function would usually be held at home and there would also be other traditions where the bride’s hair would be braided too.

Nikkah is one of the most important part of a Pakistani wedding. It is a very sacred ceremony where the bride and groom would exchange their vows. It forms the everlasting bond between man and woman when they say the magic words, “Qubool Hai”, thrice.
The couple is also required to sign a Nikkah-Naama - a marriage contract that has all the terms and conditions that both sides agree to. When signing the contract the fathers of the couple will stand as witnesses. The Nikkah is held at different times, but usually, people have it before the Baraat function and after the pre-wedding celebration.
5. The Baraat – Sweet Goodbyes

The next function is the Baraat, which is the departing ceremony where the bride would leave her home. The groom would come in a procession to take the bride away. The most important part of this function is the Rukhsati, which is a very sad moment for the family and the bride of course since she is leaving the place she always called home!
Everyone in the family would wish the bride goodbye, it’s a feeling of mixed emotions – sadness and happiness! The food for a Baraat event is very rich and lavish and would usually include delicious Pakistani dishes like kebabs, pulao, biryani, chicken curry, halwa, kheer etcetera. During the Baraat more time is also given for clicking some good pictures.

It’s a way of saying thank you to family and guests. For the Walima function, the groom’s side would choose the bride’s dress.
