The Reddy Marriage Background

Reddy’s are a community found in the Indian state Andhra Pradesh as well as Telangana. While a Reddy marriage resembles other forms of South Indian weddings, it has a number of its own elements. Remember that weddings are a serious affair with the Reddy community. This is not to say that their weddings are boring, sure they are super fun too.

However, the rites and ceremonies are taken rather seriously so as to maintain and preserve the sanctity. If you are planning to have a crazy party, save that for the reception and remember to respect that.

1. The Rituals

Coming to the rituals in a Reddy marriage there’s a lot you need to learn. From the way they happen to the symbolism and what you can wear for them.

A. The engagement ceremony

Once the dates have been finalised, its time for the engagement ceremony or the Nisachaitharthum. Its a rather simple affair, so don’t be surprised if your best friend calls you over to her house for this. This is also an event where the bride and groom are presented with gifts. So do not forget to her the perfect engagement gift.

What to wear:

Seeing as how it's a simple event, you can probably go ahead and wear a slightly heavy suit. Maybe a Chikankari kurta with leggings and pretty earrings can do the trick.

B. Haldi or Pendlikoothuru

Truly Candid

Much like the North IndianHaldi ceremony, this one usually takes place a day or two before the wedding. The Haldi, also known as Naluga is infused aromatic oils and smeared across the bride and groom’s faces, arms and legs. >You could go ahead and get her a Gajra for her Indian hairstyle. For once the ceremony is over, the bride puts on the Gajra as custom.

What to Wear: Go for a lovely yellow to suit the occasion. Again, it doesn’t have to be anything too heavy.

It's finally time! It all begins with the Puja so as to start off the rest of the rituals. The groom is escorted by young girls who carry a sacred oil lamp. The bride is brought in a bamboo Doli on the shoulders of her brother and/or uncle. Make sure you are found around the Doli like the perfect bridesmaid. After they’ve been seated, there remains a curtain between the bride and groom till the time is right and once it's removed its time for the Muhurutam.

It's here that a groom ties a yellow thread around the bride’s neck that has a golden pendant. This is an important one! So remember to document it for her. There’s also another ritual called Madhuparkam in the Reddy marriage where both the bride and groom have to change attires.

You know you have to assist her in getting ready! Once all that’s done, a few rituals later it would finally be time for the Kanyadanaam. Remember to hug her tight, it's not like you guys won’t meet again but this marks a special moment in your friendship. Cry your heart out if you so, please.

What to Wear: Its finally time to pull out the gem from your closet (or your mum’s). Go for a beautiful Kanjivaram saree with a lovely border and add a lovely Kamarband to it. Well, you are attending a Reddy marriage, so look the part.
