Vasant Panchami is an Indian festival celebrated on the fifth day of the Hindu month of Maagh. This festival marks the incoming of the spring season. In many parts of the country, on the day of Vasant Panchami, Saraswati Puja is also done. On this day, Goddess Saraswati is worshipped. As Goddess Saraswati is the goddess of culture and wisdom, young kids who are learning to speak and write are made to write their first words in front of her idols for her to bless them. People also wear yellow on Vasant Panchami as it is considered to be auspicious. In 2023, Vasant Panchami falls on 26th January.

There are many different stories of historical significance associated with Vasant Panchami. According to one legend, this was the day when the famous poet Kaalidasa decided to commit suicide by drowning in a river since his wife had left him. As the story goes, Goddess Saraswati appeared from the river and stopped him from taking his own life. She asked him to bathe in the river instead and granted him immense wisdom which helped him become the most renowned poet of all time.

The story holds a lot of importance in the Hindu culture and it is believed that Goddess Saraswati blesses kids and adults with wisdom and creative energy on this day. For the same reason, in most households across states like Odisha, Kerala, Maharashtra, Bengal, etc, books and notebooks of school and college-going kids and students are kept in Saraswati Puja.
